.KEY MESSAGES...
* Hot today with isolated showers and storms possible from northeast
California to near the Oregon border this afternoon.
* Isolated to scattered storms are likely each afternoon Monday
through Wednesday in northeast California and northwest Nevada.
Dry lightning may result in new fire starts this week.
* Typical summer heat is favored for the holiday weekend with
lingering chances of afternoon showers and thunderstorms.

.DISCUSSION...
Today and Monday will be the hottest days of the next week with
daytime highs well into the 80s and 90s. A slow cooling trend begins
Tuesday, but typical summertime heat -- daytime highs near 80F and
90F -- prevails through the holiday weekend. A slight chance (15-
20%) of showers and thunderstorms exists this afternoon from
northeast California north of Truckee into far northern Washoe
County.
Weak low pressure slowly evolves from the eastern Pacific to
southern Nevada this week, resulting in daily chances of
thunderstorms each afternoon and evening. There continues to be a
consistent signal that Lassen County and far northern Washoe County
will be the most favorable areas for thunderstorm development each
afternoon through midweek. Areas farther south and east have better
potential for afternoon showers and thunderstorms Tuesday and
Wednesday. The main hazard appears to be strong outflow winds given
a dry subcloud layer, though small hail, brief downpours, and
lightning will also accompany any mature storm.
The Independence Day weekend continues to favor seasonably hot
temperatures with daily chances of showers and storms in the
afternoons.

.AVIATION...
The primary weather concerns today will be the potential for heat-
induced density altitude issues, and low odds of showers and
thunderstorms north of Tahoe. Density altitude issues will be most
likely in western Nevada -- especially at KNFL-KLOL -- where daytime
highs flirt with 100F. KTRK and KSVE will be most susceptible to
thunderstorm impacts this afternoon, but chances of a thunderstorm
within 10 miles of either terminal is only 10-15%. Otherwise, VFR
conditions and breezy afternoon winds prevail elsewhere.
Additional showers and thunderstorms are possible Monday afternoon
across NE California and N Washoe County.

&&
.FIRE WEATHER...
Isolated dry lightning and strong, erratic outflow winds will likely
accompany thunderstorm activity in Lassen and far northern Lassen
County Monday and Tuesday afternoons. Coverage of storms likely
expands farther south and east into the Sierra and western Nevada
Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, but odds are only around 15-20%.
Given the antecedent hot and dry conditions, the potential for new
lightning ignitions increases in the days leading up to the holiday
and possibly beyond.
